Backyard Remodel in San Diego – Palladino Family Project
From slope to sanctuary — see how we transformed the Palladinos’ backyard with structural upgrades, a pool renovation, and a modern deck design.
Before & After: From Sloped Yard to Resort-Style Backyard

Project Spotlight: Full Backyard Remodel in San Diego
The Palladino family had a vision: turn their worn-out backyard into a modern retreat. But their space had major challenges — an unstable slope, an old pool, and no safe, usable layout. They needed more than just cosmetic upgrades — they needed full transformation.
The Problem
The old retaining wall was failing, the pool area was outdated, and the yard had no flow or function. It wasn’t safe, stylish, or usable for the family.
The Solution
We demolished the failing structures, built a new CMU retaining wall with reinforced footing, upgraded the pool shell and finish, installed custom stairs, poured new concrete, and added synthetic grass and decking for a clean, modern look.
From Design to Execution
This project combined engineering precision, concrete work, hardscaping, and clean finish carpentry. Every detail — from rebar layout to synthetic turf — was designed for longevity and function.
What This Project Meant
For the Palladino family, this wasn’t just a remodel — it was a full backyard rebirth. What was once unusable terrain is now a functional, beautiful space where they can gather, relax, and enjoy for years to come.
Behind the Build: Step-by-Step Backyard Remodel

1. Pre-Construction Site Conditions
The backyard was uneven, with patchy grass and a partially exposed slope behind the pool.

2. Excavation Begins
We started clearing the slope and leveling the area to prepare for construction.

3. Grading and Planning
Crew marked elevations and created access paths for upper slope work.

4. Rebar Installation
Steel rebar was set in place to reinforce the new retaining wall.

5. Wall Footing and First Blocks
Concrete footing was poured, and the first row of CMU blocks was set.

6. Wall Building Continues
More block rows were added, ensuring level alignment and stability.

7. Wall Extension and Height Work
The wall was built higher and tied into the hillside for support.

8. Stair Framing
Wood forms were installed for new concrete stairs between levels.

9. Stair Pour and Wall Prep
Concrete was poured into the stairs; wall surfaces were prepped for stucco.

10. Stucco Base Applied
Base coat stucco was sprayed, and the stair structure was finished in concrete.

11. Pool Interior Finish Applied
The plaster finish is sprayed and hand-smoothed to seal and waterproof the pool shell.

12. Pool Filled with Water
Fresh water is added to cure the new finish and test all plumbing systems.

13. Grouting Around Spa Deck
Grout is applied between pavers for a clean, finished look around the spa area.

14. Final Landscaping Touches
All stucco walls and planters are painted with weather-resistant exterior paint.

15. Spa & Pool Furnished for Comfort
Spa is filled and tested, ensuring jets and tiles function properly.

16. Landscaping and Final Setup
New grass, plants, and furniture complete the backyard transformation.
