Modern Pergola Installation in San Diego – Tom’s Backyard Transformation

Functional framing, upgraded layout, and a bold new look. See how we helped Tom reimagine his entire backyard.

Before & After: Complete Backyard Overhaul + Modern Pergola Build

Project Spotlight: Modern Pergola Installation in San Diego

Tom’s existing patio and backyard setup were no longer working for him. The structure was outdated, the drainage was poor, and the overall layout felt disjointed. He wanted a modern outdoor living space that could be both functional and beautiful—starting with a brand-new structural foundation and framed pergola.

The Problem

The original backyard had serious issues. The old patio structure was aging, the yard was sloped and unusable, and the overall space lacked flow and appeal. Drainage issues and unstable framing made the space feel more like a burden than a bonus.

The Solution

We demolished the old structure, poured new concrete footings, framed a custom modern pergola, and regraded the yard to prepare it for new landscaping and finishes. Every step was carefully planned to deliver long-term durability, aesthetic appeal, and functionality.

Fast Turnaround, High-Impact Results

Tom wanted results, but he also wanted the job done right. We worked quickly and cleanly—coordinating inspections, planning ahead for design features, and using only high-quality framing materials and hardware for lasting strength.

In just a few weeks, Tom’s space was unrecognizable—in the best way possible. The new layout is ready for finishing touches, and the custom pergola is a focal point he can enjoy for years to come.

What This Project Meant

This wasn’t just a pergola—it was the start of a brand-new lifestyle. Tom now has the foundation of a modern outdoor space that adds comfort, value, and beauty to his home.

Behind the Build: Step-by-Step Pergola Framing

1. Before the Build

Tom’s original backyard included a white patio cover, rose garden, and aging hardscape—but the space lacked structure and modern design.

2. Full Yard Demolition Begins

We cleared the existing landscaping, patio, and lawn to prepare for a full structural and layout reset.

3. Excavation for Foundation and Drainage

Our team dug out multiple footing trenches and prepared the soil for utility rerouting, drainage lines, and framing support.

4. Rebar and Formwork Installed

Wood forms were built, and rebar was carefully tied and laid in preparation for concrete pours to support new load-bearing structures.

5. Concrete Footings Poured

We poured concrete into the forms, embedding anchor bolts and plumbing stubs for future framing and utility connections.

6. Curing and Anchor Bolt Setting

After the pour, we allowed proper curing and ensured all bolts, plumbing, and elevations were secured and verified.

7. Framing Base and Utility Box Installation

We framed the base for a new structural element, including a concrete utility box and support posts for integrated pergola framing.

8. Beam-to-Wall Connections Built

Massive laminated beams were secured into the structure, tied into the house wall using steel brackets and bolts.

9. Full Wall Framing and Joist Layout

We framed new vertical walls and began laying out 2×8 joists across the span to define the pergola roof and support structure.

10. Overhead Pergola Framing Completed

With all joists installed and hardware secured, the basic shape of the modern pergola came to life—ready for roofing, lighting, and finishes.

11. Roof Decking Installed

Once framing was complete, we installed roof sheathing across the top of the pergola to prepare for insulation, electrical work, and stucco layers.

12. Electrical Rough-In and Ceiling Buildout

Wiring was pulled and boxed for lighting, ceiling fans, and outlets. We then added wood tongue-and-groove ceiling boards for a sleek, modern overhead finish.

13. Stucco Wrapped Columns and Back Wall

We applied new stucco around all pergola columns and the back wall of the home, blending seamlessly with the original exterior.

14. Tiling and Outdoor Kitchen Finish

Large-format concrete-look tile was installed for the new patio floor, followed by built-in kitchen elements like the grill, sink, counters, and custom fireplace.

15. Landscaping and Hardscape Finalization

We laid down new synthetic grass, gravel walkways, and garden paths with modern drought-tolerant plantings, adding beauty and usability to the space.

16. Final Result – A Modern Backyard Retreat

The completed backyard features a stunning modern pergola, entertainment-ready patio, luxury outdoor kitchen, and fully landscaped surroundings. Every inch of this space is built to impress—and built to last.

The Finished Space – Clean, Modern, and Ready for Life Outdoors

After weeks of detailed work, Tom’s backyard was fully transformed. The new modern pergola is structurally solid, beautifully finished, and seamlessly integrated with the home’s layout. From lighting to landscaping, this space is now a private, functional retreat that’s perfect for relaxing or entertaining.
